Why do I still need to contribute to my MediSave if I am a Self-Employed Person who met my Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS) at age 65?
As there may be withdrawals from your MediSave Account after age 65, it is important to continue making regular MediSave contributions. This ensures you have sufficient MediSave savings for your future healthcare needs, especially during old age when you may have unexpected healthcare costs after you stop working.
This arrangement is similar to that for employees, who are also required to contribute to their CPF even if they have met the Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS). If you are aged 55 and above, your MediSave contributions above the BHS will be automatically transferred to Special or Retirement Accounts to help you set aside your Full Retirement Sum in cash. Once you have set aside the FRS, excess MediSave contributions will be transferred to your Ordinary Account (OA), which can be used for other purposes such as housing repayment.
